Thread weight numbers run backwards from what you'd expect: the bigger the number, the finer the thread.

Why "weight" means the opposite of what it sounds like

Thread weight numbering describes how many kilometers of thread it takes to weigh one kilogram — so a thinner thread needs more length to reach that weight, giving it a higher number. A 100wt thread is fine and delicate; a 12wt thread is thick and heavy. This is the reverse of denier or tex systems, where a bigger number means a thicker thread, which is why the same spool can look confusingly labeled differently depending on the manufacturer's system.

Matching thread weight to your project

All-purpose 50wt covers the vast majority of garment sewing and quilting piecing. Reach for something heavier (30–40wt) when you want topstitching to show as a visible design line, and something finer (60wt+) when you want stitching to disappear into delicate or sheer fabric.

Thread weight and needle size go together

A too-fine needle for a heavy thread will fray or shred it as it passes through the eye; a too-heavy needle for fine thread can leave visible holes. As a starting point, pair 50wt thread with a size 80/12 needle, heavier 30–40wt thread with a 90/14 or topstitching needle, and fine 60wt+ thread with a 70/10 or finer needle — then adjust based on your fabric.
