Perimeter, plus a bit more
The binding needs to run all the way around the quilt's perimeter, plus roughly 10" extra to turn the mitered corners cleanly and join the two ends of the binding strip together where they meet.
Straight-grain vs. bias binding
Most quilts with straight edges use straight-grain binding cut across the width of fabric (WOF), which is what this calculator figures. Bias-cut binding is reserved for quilts with curved edges (like scalloped borders) since only bias-cut strips can ease around a curve without puckering — for that, use the Bias Tape Length Calculator instead.
Rounding strips into yardage
Fabric is sold by length, not by the strip, so this calculator rounds the number of WOF strips up to a whole number, then converts that many strip-widths into yards. Always round the final yardage up to your fabric store's smallest sold increment.
