Why you need more than the exact edge length

Binding and piping have to ease slightly around corners and curves rather than lying perfectly flat against the raw edge, and both ends need extra length to fold under or overlap cleanly where they meet. Cutting exactly to the measured edge length almost always comes up short once those two things are accounted for.

How the ease multiplier works

The multiplier scales up the raw edge measurement based on how much shaping the binding has to ease around — a nearly straight edge barely needs extra, while a tightly curved neckline or an edge with several corners needs noticeably more.
